Activity 7: Why do we sprinkle salt on icy roads?

Have you ever wondered why we sprinkle salt on the roads in winter?

Try it yourself:

Place two or three ice cubes on two plates. Put salt on one plate and don’t put on the other. What would happen? Write down your observations.

Extra Challenge:

What do you think will happen when you freeze a plastic bottle of freshwater and a plastic bottle of salt water? Write down your guesses and try it out!

 

 

Salt makes ice melt. And this is exactly what we want when the roads are slippery and dangerous in winter!
