Salz

[:en]What is salt?

Salt is something very special. Salt was a big phenomenon even in the ancient times and people regarded it as important as the Sun. The Romans felt that salt was something they could not do without. They valued salt, because they thought it could give them unspeakable powers. The Greeks saw salt as a symbol of purity, loyalty, goodness and hospitality.

Even today, people give each other bread and salt when they move into a new home. Without salt, our food would taste very bland. Many products cannot be made without salt.
In this research book, you will experiment with salt. You will grow and build salt crystals, feel, taste, bake, model, shape and paint with salt. You will also learn the uses of salt. You will go home with many memories that will remind you of the adventure of salt over and over again.

Where does salt come from?

Have you ever wondered how the salt comes to our table? Salt has to pass through many stages before it can be eaten as a spice.

Seawater has been used to produce salt for several thousand years. In southern countries, the seawater is directed into large areas (Salt Farms) where it evaporates thanks to the hot sun. After evaporation of water, the salt remains and then it can be processed. In the first pond, there is still a lot of sand, mud and microorganisms that need to be cleaned up. The seawater continues to evaporate in other ponds until only the salt remains. This is pushed together with machines or by hand. It is thoroughly cleaned and packed.

The Rock Salt is extracted from underground salt deposits. These deposits were formed millions of years ago, when marginal oceans dried up. The remaining salt was pushed under other rock layers due to rotation of the earth. For this reason, salt is also produced in countries that have no more oceans. However, the fact remains that there were once seas and the salt has to be taken out from the depths. Today, this is done with machines and blasting holes that are drilled in the salt deposits. Rock salt is mainly used in the production of textiles, medicines, soap, glass and thawing of roads.
In many countries, common table salt is produced in Salt-Works. It is also called Evaporated Salt. The salty water (Brine) is evaporated in salt mines. This is done by drilling cavities into salt deposits and passing fresh water through them. The salt dissolves in fresh water and the brine is formed. The brine is processed in large containers called Evaporators. The resulting salt is dried, cleaned and packed.[:de]Was ist Salz?

Ohne Salz würde unsere Nahrung sehr fade schmecken. Zahlreiche Produkte könnte man ohne Salz gar nicht herstellen.

In diesem Forscherheft experimentierst du rund ums Thema Salz.

Salamura isparava u rudnicima soli.
